HSP is delighted to hear the excellent news that two Vaillant heating projects have been nominated for the HVNews Awards. Congratulations are due not just for having more than one nomination but because both projects nominated are contributing to the needs of those in social housing in an innovative way whilst demonstrating the excellence of Vaillant’s engineering prowess.
Both projects channel renewable technologies through utilisation of Vaillant heat pumps in situations where this has not previously happened, and help reduce the energy bills of tenants in social housing with low income which in turn helps prevent fuel poverty. HSP can thoroughly endorse the use of technical creativity to improve social conditions. It is, after all, why many of us become engineers!
In the Collaboration of the Year Category shortlist is a project with Derby Homes. Vaillant worked in partnership with Derby Homes to install its aroTHERM air source heat pumps on balconies of high-rise apartment blocks in Derby City. Vaillant engineers and Derby Homes staff worked together to project manage the installation of the energy efficient heating and hot water appliances. This included liaison with tenants and demonstrating and advising on using and maximising the benefits of the new technology. Derby Homes’ staff received direct training from Vaillant in installation processes and effectively enabled a heating a hot water supply system transition to be minimally disruptive to the tenants of the 54 apartments covered by the project. HSP is happy to note also that the tenants are still able to enjoy their balconies as the installations are compact and unobtrusive.
In the District Heating Project of the Year Category shortlist is a project in partnership with Bromford, a provider of social housing in Solihull. The project task was to replace existing storage heaters in a Victorian building housing 24 apartments. Vaillant calculated heat loss capacity in each of the 24 and advised that three 38kW geoTHERM ground source heat pumps to supply a centralised heat-only system were needed.
Vaillant also designed an off-site plant room within a shipping container. Installation partner, J Tomlinson Ltd stipulated insulation and access for service and maintenance for this “Energy Centre” and in addition to the three heat pumps, two 1,000 litre buffer cylinders, twin headed brine pump and custom controls were installed. Once the container was fully equipped it was delivered to the New Road site, and simply plugged into the building’s heating system. HSP is, again, delighted to hear that tenants now enjoy warmth in their homes, and cheaper energy bills through the environmentally-friendly use of renewable technologies.
John Bailey, Vaillant Sales Director – Commercial and Renewable Systems says: “We are always eager to work with installer and specification partners to design innovative systems that help them to upgrade their heating technologies. There are benefits for both landlords and tenants to installing renewable technologies and we are committed to continuing to find new ways of installing heat pumps that reduce bills and carbon outputs. We are proud to have these achievements shortlisted for the HVN Awards.”
HSP is proud too. Many congratulations to Vaillant, to its partners on the projects and to all who worked on these two excellent, and socially worthwhile projects.
